By Laura Brown / Staff / Business Insider / Updated Jan. 21, 2018 11:48:21The Orlando-Hollywood International Airport Authority (OIA) on Monday announced it will extend the opening of the Magic Kingdom’s Wilderness Resort to Jan. 1, 2018.
The OIA is a federal agency that administers the Walt Disney World Resort.
The decision comes after a meeting in January of OIA Commissioners, the chairman of which is Walt Disney Parks and Resorts CEO Tom Staggs.
The decision to extend the resort is based on concerns that the current closure of the resort could lead to “a large number of adverse impacts to our guests and the economy in the resort and surrounding areas,” OIA spokesperson John Della Vigna said in a statement.OIA Commissioner Jim Gullberg said he was encouraged by the OIA’s announcement.
“I believe that a resort that was not operational during the winter and the summer months is not a reliable place to host and host a large amount of guests,” Gullburg said.
“It is very important for our guests to be able to go back to the resort, but I think we have a lot of work to do to ensure that happens.”
The Magic Kingdom Resort, one of the Disney theme parks that will be open to guests for the first time in more than a decade, will open Jan. 4.
The Wilderness Resort will open its doors Feb. 6.
Both resorts will be closed to the public on Jan. 3, 2019.
Overnight guests who arrive at the Orlando Resort by the morning of Jan. 5, 2019 will be able visit the Magic King in the Wilderness.
The Wilderness Resort and Magic Kingdom both offer amenities such as food, entertainment and a water park.
The Magic Kingdom is the only attraction open at night, and all guests will be allowed to stay up to four nights.
The Magic City Resort, which opened its doors to guests in 2019, will reopen Jan. 18.
Guests can use the resort for their nighttime entertainment, and a restaurant, bar and bar lounge will be available for dinner, the Oia said.
The resort will be opened to guests through a new, four-hour reservation system, which will be accessible by text and mobile apps, Della Della said.
Guests will be asked to provide a picture ID and to verify their age.
Della Dlla said the resort will continue to be open through the holidays, but it will not be able open until it has fully recovered from the winter storm.
The new resort is slated to open at the beginning of the new year.
The resort will have a three-level, one-day resort entrance, but a full-day entrance is not expected until spring 2019.
